Fancy yourself as a wine connoisseur? You might be used to ordering bottles, carafes and maybe even magnums, but what about a Salmanazzar or Nebuchadnezzars? Thought not!
On 1 October 2014, the Michelin starred Bohemia restaurant in Jersey launched its new Grand Formats wine list, believed to be one of the largest in the UK.
The list encompasses over 30 different large bottle wines from Magnums (2 bottles) to Imperiales (8 bottles wine) and includes Salmanazzar and Nebuchadnezzars of Champagne (12 & 20 bottles).
Creating the list has been a challenge, with the Restaurant Manager Dimitri Marqueteau spending months sourcing the rarer bottles from all over Europe, including UK auctions and direct from wine houses in France.
Dimitri said: “Building our Grand Formats list has been one of the hardest challenges I have faced as they are only ever produced in small numbers and the best ones get snapped up quickly by collectors and few top London and Paris restaurants. Therefore, we have had to work hard to secure our list and we aim to keep growing it going forward so our customers can enjoy new and interesting Grand Format wines.”
“Drinking large format bottle wines is one of the best ways to enjoy a wine's potential, because the oxygen-to-wine ratio is lower in a larger bottle - wines typically age more slowly and have better maturation.”
Lawrence Huggler Owner of Bohemia also adds: "Plus they are great fun! There is nothing like a huge bottle like an Impériale of red being brought to your table. You need a few friends with you though at 8 bottles in one.”
Bohemia expects the new Grand Formats list to be a particular hit over the Christmas season with larger table numbers and private parties both in Bohemia restaurant and in Bohemia’s three different private dining rooms.
